Abstract

A study of the interdependencies between urbanisation and various socio-economic correlates during the past two decades throws up some surprising results. According to the Population Census of 2011, about 377 million Indians comprising 31.17 per cent of the country's population, live in towns and cities. India's pace of urbanization during the previous decade was slower than projected earlier by United Nation experts (2000 and 2010) as well as Registrar General of India (2006).
